Part 4 – Self Control

When we practice self-control, we are transmitting to others the power of God in us.

What is self-control? It is restraining from emotionally reacting toward something or someone. It is about controlling our speech and mannerisms. It is self-discipline.

Proverbs 12:1 tell us that whoever loves discipline loves knowledge.

Self-control has to do with training ourselves to be godly. 1 Timothy 4:7-8.

Self-control is about overlooking an offense, either from others or from ourselves.

As believers, we know our weaknesses, and the enemy wants to use those to get us to walk in the things of the world instead of the spirit.  We need to concentrate on the things above and walk in the realm of the spirit so we can conquer situations like:

Anger, desires of the flesh, gossip, sexual misconduct, bad language, impatientness, addictions, and many other bad habits.  The scriptures tell us that we all fall short of the kingdom of God, so we all need something to work on and improve.

Think about what you have trouble with. These areas we must submit to God.

When we don’t have self-control or are not disciplined, it affects the people around us.

For example, if you have a problem with drinking alcohol, then you must exercise self-control.  The best way is by staying away from it and allowing God to help overcome it.

Romans 8:6 says, “The mindset of the flesh is death; the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace.

Many times, we need to have self-control about things like being clean, reading the bible, being organized, being good stewards of our finances, and many other things.

Think about Yeshua; he exercised self-control when he was taken before King Herod, who made fun of Yeshua, scoffing and jeering at him, but Yeshua was silent.

Ephesians 6:11-12 “Put on the full armor of God, so that you are able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the worldly forces of this darkness, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
