The Champions of the Bible
Many times, we think of heroes as someone who has done something for someone else. But what is it that motivates a person to do something nice or good for someone else? Let me present to you some hidden champions from the scriptures that rise to the occasion with many victories.
Trust the Champion – Letting go and Trusting in God.
We know the story of Jacob and how difficult his life unfolded.
Genesis 43:11-14 “11 Their father Isra’el answered them, “If that’s how it is, do this: take in your containers some of the land’s best products and bring the man a gift some healing resin, a little honey, aromatic gum, opium, pistachio nuts and, almonds. 12 Take twice the amount of money with you and return the money that came back with you in your packs — it could have been an oversight. 13 Yes, and take your brother too, and get ready, and go again to the man. 14 May El Shaddai give you favor in the man’s sight so that he will release to you your other brother as well as Binyamin. As for me, if I must lose my children, lose them I will.” CJB
Sometimes we must let go to receive the blessings of God. It is hard to do but if we empty ourselves and give room to something new in our life, God can come in and bless us with his love.
Matthew 9:17 tells us “17 Nor do people put new wine in old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine spills, and the wineskins are ruined. No, they pour new wine into freshly prepared wineskins, and in this way, both are preserved.” CJB
Bravery the Champion – Labor of love and deliverer of Israel – Jael
Jael was not an ordinary woman. She surely demonstrated valor and meekness. She knew about the battle that was going on and that the Israelites had the favor of God. So, when she saw Sisera, the general wonder to her tent, she lured him in and gain his confidence. While he was asleep, Jael killed the enemy of Israel. Defeated by a woman, surely embarrassing and a poor way of death for a general.
Judges 4:21-23 “17 However, Sisra ran on foot to the tent of Ya‘el the wife of Hever the Keini, because there was peace between Yavin the king of Hatzor and the family of Hever the Keini. 18 Ya‘el went out to meet Sisra and said to him, “Come in, my lord; stay here with me, and don’t be afraid.” So, he went into her tent, and she covered him with a blanket. 19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink — I’m thirsty.” She opened a goatskin of milk, gave him some to drink, and covered him up again. 20 He said to her, “Stand at the entrance to the tent; and if anyone asks you if somebody is here, say, ‘No.'” 21 But when he was deeply asleep, Ya‘el the wife of Hever took a tent peg and a hammer in her hand, crept in to him quietly and drove the tent peg into his temple, right through to the ground; so that he died without waking up. 22 So here is Barak pursuing Sisra, and Ya‘el steps out to meet him and says, “Come, I will show you the man you are looking for.” He goes into her tent; and there is Sisra, lying dead with the tent peg through his temple. 23 Thus God on that day defeated Yavin the king of Kena‘an in the presence of the people of Isra’el.” CJB
Jael was honored by the song Debora and Barak sang:
Judges 5:24-27 “Ya‘el will be blessed more than all women. The wife of Hever the Keini will be blessed more than any woman in the tent. 25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk; In an elegant bowl, she brought him curds. 26 Then she took a tent peg in her left hand and a workman’s hammer in her right; with the hammer, she struck Sisra, pierced his skull, yes, she shattered and crushed his temple. 27 He sank down at her feet, he fell and lay there; he sank at her feet, he fell where he sank down, there he fell dead.” CJB
After this victory, Israel rested for 40 years. Judges 5:31
Wisdom the Champion – Pro-Life standing for Life
Shiphrah and Pua Knew and fear the God of Israel to the point of taking a stand for the truth. They gave Pharaoh a wise answer. These women stood for life and the scriptures tell us that they were founders of families. They saved many boys; perhaps Moshe was one of the boys for chapter 2 goes into his birth.
Exodus 1:15-21 “15 Moreover, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was called Shifrah and the other Pu‘ah. 16 “When you attend the Hebrew women and see them giving birth,” he said, “if it’s a boy, kill him; but if it’s a girl, let her live.” 17 However, the midwives were God-fearing women, so they didn’t do as the king of Egypt ordered but let the boys live. (ii) 18 The king of Egypt summoned the midwives and demanded of them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live?” 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “It’s because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women — they go into labor and give birth before the midwife arrives.” 20 Therefore God prospered the midwives, and the people continued to multiply and grow very powerful. 21 Indeed, because the midwives feared God, he made them founders of families.” CJB
When we fear the Lord, God blesses us. The scriptures tell us in
Psalms 9:10 “The fear of Adonai is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of holy ones is understanding.” CJB
Saving babies is our business today. We must not stand in the sidelines; we must be part of saving babies.
Provider the Champion – Donations and Encouragement at work
Barzillai, Machir, and Shobi were God sent. David after running from Absalom his son was tired, discouraged and hungry. But God revitalized David with a visit from these three men.
2 Samuel 17:27-29 “27 After David had arrived in Machanayim, Shovi the son of Nachash, from Rabbah of the people of ‘Amon; Machir the son of ‘Ammi’el from Lo-D’var and Barzillai the Gil‘adi from Roglim 28 brought beds, basins, clay pots, wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, roasted millet, 29 honey, curdled milk, sheep and cheese made of cow’s milk for David and the people with him to eat; because they said, “These people are hungry, tired and thirsty from the desert.” CJB
Machanayim means in between two camps. So, we can assume that David was not just tired and hungry but he was having doubts and was being double-minded and depressed. God is so graceful that he finds us in the middle of the desert and provides for us.
Humbleness the Champion in action – The Leper with a request
Luke 5:12-15 “12 Once, when Yeshua was in one of the towns, there came a man completely covered with tzara‘at. On seeing Yeshua, he fell on his face and begged him, “Sir, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 13 Yeshua reached out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing! Be cleansed!” Immediately the tzara‘at left him. 14 Then Yeshua warned him not to tell anyone. “Instead, as a testimony to the people, go straight to the cohen and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moshe commanded.” 15 But the news about Yeshua kept spreading all the more, so that huge crowds would gather to listen and be healed of their sicknesses.” CJB
This Leper heard about Yeshua. He put his shame aside, he put his fear of rejection aside, he put his pride aside, fell on his knees and ask humbly, “Sir if you are willing, you can make me clean,” and Yeshua told him: “I am willing.” Today if we come to him humbly with our troubles and our situations and ask for his help, Yes, the King is willing.
Courage the Champion – Witnessing with might and love
Stephen in acts 7 defends and reveal the identity of Yeshua as
Acts 7:51-60 “51 “Stiffnecked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You continually oppose the Ruach HaKodesh! You do the same things your fathers did! 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who told in advance about the coming of the Tzaddik, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers! 53 you! who receive the Torah as having been delivered by angels but do not keep it!” 54 On hearing these things, they were cut to their hearts and ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, full of the Ruach HaKodesh, looked up to heaven and saw God’s Sh’khinah, with Yeshua standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look!” he exclaimed, “I see heaven opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 At this, they began yelling at the top of their voices, so that they wouldn’t have to hear him; and with one accord, they rushed at him, 58 threw him outside the city and began stoning him. And the witnesses laid down their coats at the feet of a young man named Sha’ul. 59 As they were stoning him, Stephen called out to God, “Lord Yeshua! Receive my spirit!” 60 Then he kneeled and shouted out, “Lord! Don’t hold this sin against them!” With that, he died;” CJB
Stephen knew the Lord, Stephen new the word, Stephen knew the talk. We need to be like Stephen and arm ourselves with these three so when we are afraid to speak the word, courage can rise to the occasion.
Sacrifice the Champion – Forgiveness the weapon that won the battle
Yeshua could have been bitter, He could have been angry, he could have been vindictive but no he said at the time of much pain and suffocation. At the time where his clothes were being gambled, at the time people were sneering insults at him, at the time where he was being ridiculed and made fun off.
Luke 23:34 “34 Yeshua said, “Father, forgive them; they don’t understand what they are doing.” CJB
Yeshua is waiting for us with open arms. He forgave us then and He forgive us now. If we only cry out to Him and believe. The scripture tells us that it is a simple thing that we must do:
2 Chronicles 7:14 “14 then, if my people, who bear my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.” CJB
Yeshua is a light like no other. Why be in the dark, let’s pursue the truth for the truth will set us free. John 8:32
1 John 1:6 “6 If we claim to have fellowship with him while we are walking in the darkness, we are lying and not living out the truth.” CJB
