The Ark of the Covenant – The Mercy Seat

One important aspect of the ark of the covenant is the cover which is also known as the mercy seat.

The meaning in Hebrew is rachem, or compassion.  In Hebrew the significance is (  כַּפֹּרֶת  ) Kapporeth or atonement or reconciliation, reparation, restoration.  The instructions of building the cover of the ark are found in Exodus 37:6-9.

Mercy Seat as the throne and as Yeshua

Psalms 99:1 “Adonai is king; let the peoples tremble. He sits enthroned on the k’ruvim; let the earth shake!” CJB

Hebrews 4:16 “16 Therefore, let us confidently approach the throne from which God gives grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace in our time of need. CJB

The Mercy Seat with the Keruv as a representation of His glory

Hebrews 9:5 “and above it were the k’ruvim representing the Sh’khinah, casting their shadow on the lid of the Ark

John 20:11-12 “11 but Miryam stood outside crying. As she cried, she bent down, peered into the tomb, 12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Yeshua had been, one at the head and one at the feet.” CJB

The Mercy Seat as a place to meet Elohim

Exodus 25:22 “There I will meet with you. I will speak with you from above the ark-cover, from between the two k’ruvim which are on the ark for the testimony, about all the orders I am giving you for the people of Isra’el.” CJB

The Mercy Seat as the place of atonement and forgiveness through Yeshua the Messiah

Hebrews 9:11 “11 But when the Messiah appeared as cohen gadol of the good things that are happening already, then, through the greater and more perfect Tent which is not man-made (that is, it is not of this created world), 12 he entered the Holiest Place once and for all. And he entered not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus setting people free forever.” CJB

Yeshua is the mercy seat, He is the place of compassion, a place of love.  He is the place that we can approach and receive complete holiness.  If we sincerely come to Him and repent, His mercy is beyond what we can forever receive.
